The crosslinked resin with a special structure can be thermally decomposed at about 1000°C to obtain hard carbon. This type of carbon is also difficult to graphitize at high temperatures above 2500°C. Common hard carbons include resin carbon, organic polymer pyrolysis carbon, and carbon black.

Research has found that hard carbon materials have a high reversible specific capacity, generally 500-700mAH. Low or non-graphitized hard carbon is also a negative electrode material for power lithium-ion batteries. The hard carbon has a stable structure and long charge-discharge cycle life, and the carbon-lithium potential can be higher than 0.2V, which has better safety performance. It can overcome the high reactivity of graphitized carbon charging into lithiated graphite. Once the internal shortness occurs, it will cause serious exothermic reversal and the risk of explosion.

Hard carbon also has the problems that the discharge voltage varies greatly with the capacity, and the first charge and discharge efficiency is lower than that of graphitized carbon. Research on the modification of hard carbon materials is one of the important ways to improve the use of hard carbon as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
